RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION OF DOLPHINS AND MEDITERRANEAN MONK SEALS

REPORT A SIGHTING

The Ionian Dolphin Project aims to ensure the long-term viability of dolphins and monk seals living in coastal waters of the eastern Ionian Sea.

You can help us gather valuable information on these charismatic species.

By reporting your encounters with cetaceans (whales and dolphins) and Mediterranean monk seals, you will help us shed light on their distribution and contribute to their conservation.

By following our very basic guidelines, you will minimise any disturbance or adverse impact on cetaceans and monk seals when encountering them at sea.

The IDP marine mammal identification guide will help you recognize these species.

Research by Tethys Research Institute,  conducted in the context of the Ionian Dolphin Project, is concentrated primarily in these three Natura 2000 areas.

  • The Inner Ionian Sea Archipelago (site code GR2220003), where we study common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and Mediterranean monk seals.
  • The Gulf of Ambracia (GR2110001), where bottlenose dolphins are the only cetacean species present.
  • The waters surrounding the islands of Paxoi and Antipaxoi (GR2230004), where bottlenose, common and striped dolphins are regularly present, and monk seals are occasionally sighted.

For three decades over 1,500 non-specialist enthusiasts of marine conservation have participated in the Ionian Dolphin Project citizen-science program.

You can also join us and have an amazing experience, while fuelling our research and science-based conservation initiatives.

During your stay with us you will be part of a scientific team focused on the study and conservation of marine mammals. You will work side-by-side with our researchers and conduct daily surveys at sea. You will get to know dolphins and seals, actively contribute to field data collection and, back at the field station, help download and process digital photos (photo-identification).

The citizen-science program is managed by the Tethys Research Institute.
